Want to read a really scary and mysterious book? Check out the Book of Revelation from The Bible, with all its descriptions of end times and the mind-warping monsters that accompany it. But as the following examples from the Plottake review team show, that’s far from the only part of the good book that gives people the chills.

• “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

Revelation 13:18

• “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched.”

Mark 9:43

• “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth.”

Revelation 12:3-4

• “Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.”

Hosea 13:16

• “And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking toward those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”

Luke 21:25-26

• “And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth; They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads; They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes; During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.”

Revelation 9:3-6

• “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”
